Growing Strawberries: The First Year
For the whole first year after you have planted you should let them establish themselves. It is also important to pinch any flowers that pop up so that the energy of the flower can be focused completely in the roots rather than on producing fruit too early. The spaces that you have left between the plants can be filled up with the runners and that means that your plants will have about 6 inches in between them. The runners on the mother plant should not be cut but you can press them into the dirt for it to establish firm roots.
