Here are the FACTS
DOMAIN NAMES are not FREE
WEB HOSTING is not FREE, Those that offer free web hosting do so at your expense. They get paid big money to plaster your free web site with advertisments in the way of pop ups and adds.

Hostgator is great ( http://mellissagorecki.com/hostgator.php )– they are one of the cheapest out there (for the amount of features you get)
You can get a hosting package and purchase a domain at the same time, also with discounts.
Has everything competitor sites have (You can sit there and compare all day.. but it’s all the same!! And I love HG for everything including their customer service. If you ever have problems just ring or email them up
Plus it has fantasico, which is a one click install for things like wordpress if you want to make a blog site
Plus they always have great discounts available.
Right now you can type in HEART in the "coupon" tab when you sign up for 20% off (higher discount if you purchase at least 1 year package.. or higher) ..
If you want to pay for the smaller month by month packages, type in WORDPRESS and that gives you 9.94 off.
So basically, When I purchased my domain and hosting package for 3 months (and the domain, set up fee etc).. I ended up paying ONLY $15 bucks — which is the price of the domain alone. Everything else was knocked off.
It’ll show up before you confirm your purchase.
Also the thing I liked best about it, was even though they claim to be great at this and that — there are no long term contracts like most other sites, so you can literally change your host to someone else (And domain) at ANY time.. I liked that option. I mean hell, test out the first 3 months for 15 bucks and if you don’t like it — move

Good luck

While domains are not ever "free" there are a number of hosting companies that will pay your yearly registration fees for you if you use them to host the site.
A web host provides the server space for your website and the charges for hosting can range from Free (generally they place lots of ads on your site) all the way up to hundreds/thousands of dollars per month. The kind of host you need is going to depend on the type of site you plan to run.
For blogging there are free sites like http://www.Blogger.com, http://www.wordpress.com and others like them
If you plan to have a larger site with lots of visitors maybe for ecommerce etc. you will want a paid host. A list of discounted hosting providers can be seen at http://www.bestofthewebhosts.com. These hosting accounts range from about $5-10 per month and almost every one on that list will provide you with a free domain name.
If you plan to have a site with thousands of visitors per minute then you will need to look into a dedicated hosting solution. Dedicated providers range in the hundreds + per month for fees. A few good providers are http://www.rackspace.com, http://www.xmission.com and a few others.
Hope this helps!
