I need to open up my own website. But I heard I need to register a domain name.?
I searched the web and found a lot of sites offering a free domain name but I have to pay to register it. Can’t I just pick my own name and register it for free? If so can you tell me the best way to do it? And should there be anything I should beware of?
Thanks; I appreciate you help.
Stay cool.
Just go to GoDaddy.com and buy a cheapo one. It’s a little hassle to register it to your website…but I’m anti-tech so maybe that’s why lol. It’s not too bad.

You would I guess have to pay to register it,but if you can pull a name out of the air and no one else has got it, it should be yours to keep..
Can you register it for free? That I can’t answer.. Every site I’ve had a look at all want their pound of flesh.. They remind me of the "Ferrengi" from star trek. I think I spelled that wrong….
I hope you find one, Cheers

You can get a name for free from some sites but it would be best to go with a company like godaddy.com. They will give you a site and hosting they have great tech support and good pricing.

Yeah some offer free domains but they always have a price, either you have to post on there forums or something similar to that.
This site has all your domain registering and hosting needs, you can register a domain here and get hosting for a fairly low price while having a good reliable host.

You are better off paying the ten dollars to own the domain outright. This is as long as the name is not already taken. You really should go for a dot.com if it available as it the domain most people recognize. The .info is cheaper but does not have a really good reputation. Different countries have different domains. Canada has .ca but you need to be Canadian before you can use it. Other countries have similar policies. If you buy web hosting most will throw in a domain for free.
It is better to buy your domain from a different company than your web hosting. This way if you have problems with your webhost you can simply point the domain to another server. The easiest domain company that I found was Dynadot. The biggest thing you need to be aware of is that you have total control and ownership of the name. If you get someone else to register the domain you may not have ownership.

There is absolutely no way to get a domain name (com/net/org/etc.) for free. All top-level domain names are managed by the non-profit organization ICANN. In order to get a domain name, you would need to pay and register for it.
You should be aware that you have to provide your personal information when registering your domain name and that information becomes public domain (full name, address, e-mail, phone number, etc.) meaning anyone can search for it by using the proper databases. If you are a teenager, this is not only a concern for you, but also for your parents. You should discuss this with them, even if you manage to find a free domain name. The only way to hide the information is to pay a monthly fee.
Also, keep in mind that a domain name is only part of the expense. You will also have to buy a hosting package that suits your needs from a reputable hosting company. Depending on the amount of space and bandwidth you want and the features you desire, you can expect to pay anywhere from $25 to $100+ a year.

Have you heard about Office Live Small Business? It might be a good starting point as you look to find out more about starting your own small business website. You can choose your own domain name. It’s template-based, so you don’t need to learn how to code — the tools are provided for you. It’s extremely inexpensive. Remember, you get what you pay for with free sites, like people’s ads all over your page. Office Live SB is ad free, and it works with Google AdSense.
