An Easier Way to Recall

Whereas it might be difficult to recall a long confusing definition, it might be easier to recall the meaning and or understanding of a word or concept if it can be linked to a clear representation of something the learner already has prior knowledge or exposure to. Not only are connections made but also mental images are formed thereby helping in the smooth transition from working memory to long-term memory.
The students, whose only strategy is that of reviewing their notes, are at a severe disadvantage. By simply reading over their notes, these students lose the ability to interact with the material in a way, which would allow them to formulate links or bonds to prior knowledge that might be helpful in the learning process.
