Can anyone give advice about web hosting for multiple clients?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

I create websites for small non-profits, taking care of all the web hosting currently in GoDaddy. Is there a solution where I can host many websites, with their own domain names, yet all be in my one web hosting account so that I can pay, manage, etc. without creating multiple accounts for each client. Also, I am not bound to GoDaddy as a host so alternatives are welcome. Thanks!

http://www.hostgator.com/ is a great place to do what you want. You are on a shared server and you can control all sites from one central control panel.

Where can I go to learn web hosting from the ground up?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

I know nothing about it but would like to purchase a server, primarily for my own use, but also do web hosting for others for profit. Can anyone tell me where I would go (a website, a comprehensive but easy to understand book for newbies) to learn what I need to know about web hosting?

Try w3schools.com - it is free resource, no need to buy book for something that changes so frequently.

Have fun learning. Also see the source below for more info about using web hosting for money.

I just became a reseller with makemoneysellingdomainnames to resell web hosting and domain names?

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

I just became a reseller with makemoneysellingdomainnames to resell web hosting and domain names. I joined because I build a decent amount of websites for my own use. I was wondering why a lot of webmasters and IT people aren’t in the reseller business. I drive a taxi and talk with a lot of IT people and almost none of them take advantage of controlling the cost for web hosting. Isn’t this strange? Any comments welcome.

I think you’re wrong when you write, "I was wondering why a lot of webmasters and IT people aren’t in the reseller business."

In fact, an awful lot of people, including webmasters, IT professionals, and others, are in the hosting and domain reselling business. There are certainly at least "tens of thousands," and possibly many hundreds of thousands of "web-hosting" businesses out there, most run by people who also do web development work.

Some professionals do this "surreptitiously," creating an apparently-separate company which they use to register and host client sites. Many do it openly, telling their clients that they own the hosting or registration company.

Those professionals who do NOT resell web-hosting or domain-registration services frequently believe that their sole charge should be based on their time, not on reselling services at potentially inflated prices.

In addition, some professionals choose not to resell anything other than their own services, because they recognize that over time, the level of service at most hosting and registration companies can change.

Over the past 12 years, I’ve hosted my own and clients’ web sites on several dozen different servers (including dedicated servers, colocated servers, and many shared servers), and registered domains with many different registrars. Recently, I consolidated all my registrations to a single registrar, and I also consolidated all hosting to a single provider, but it’s likely that I’ll move some or all of this within 12 months.

What should I pay per month for web hosting?

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

I would like to start a small business web site. I will need help designing the site and I have been told that I will need web hosting. Can someone explain what hosting includes and what I should expect to pay for hosting per month?

I recommend one of these: http://www.hosttell.com/

Powweb has the best offer right now. It’s on a 50% sale - $3.88/month ($46.56/year), and you get a free domain from them. (like www.mywebsite.com)

Their hosting plan includes web builder, so you can create your site just by drag and drop (without any programming), or you could install Wordpress (easy, one click install from their control panel), choose a theme that you like, and start adding content.

What are the risks involved and approximate cost in Web Hosting Company?

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Hi, I want to start the web hosting company. I understand that I need to purchase one server machine (planned to purchase from IBM), web server and database server (will purchase from Microsoft), anti-virus.
But I also come to know that there are lot of risks involved like hacking, server crashing and so on.
But i don’t know exactly which are all the risks? Also what will be the approximate cost to start such a website?

Lucky: The truth is you don’t absolutely need to buy any of those things. It can all be farmed out to bigger companies that "host the host". This will make your life easier in many way and reduce your start-up expenses to just a few hundred dollars.

On the other hand, based on the way you asked your question it sounds like you may not yet be prepared for the task at hand. I recommend you study time management as it relates to server operations, or hire a company that can handle that for you (like mine, frankly)

Good luck . . .

how to start domain registration and web hosting business?

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

I want to start a domain registration and web hosting business.

Hi,

When looking into webhosting services for your website the first thing to do is to assess your own personal needs as they pertain to those hosting services you’ll want to consider. Small homepages will have vastly different web hosting criteria from the website of a large company for instance. It is also important to take into consideration anything you are planning on hosting in the near future as well and to take any potential growth into account so that you are not caught off guard by unexpected costs.

The next step in finding web hosting services for your needs is to compare the rates of different hosting companies. While many companies will offer temptingly low rates it’s crucial to know how much the prices will grow if your services and customer base expand.

Good technical support from your web hosting company is also critical to success. The ability to solve any problems quickly with the least disruption possible is key to the growth of your website. The best technical support you can hope for from a web hosting company is an in house 24 hours a day, seven days a week, phone & email, based in your home country service. It’s also worth finding out if the technical support is free or comes with a charge. Also, make sure the hosting company clearly defines "consulting" versus "technical support" as technical support will most likely be free while consulting may have a price tag.

You also need to know how fast your internet hosting company can provide access to anyone visiting your website. This is easily researchable, with the most obvious way being to visit other websites hosted by your potential web host, perhaps varying the time of day you visit the website and focussing on the times when you think your target audience will visit your website. The best webhosting services will offer high levels of uptime which should be a guarantee to motivate the company to keep servers up all the time, while providing impetus to act quickly if anything goes wrong.

I believe you can make a good choice after reading the reviews about web hosting at http://www.bestwebhostingchoice.com/

Web Hosting?

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Hey i have a question on web hosting
question: is there any web hosting website where i can host my files and other users can download it or do whatever they want to do, but the URL or the link to the files always remains the same. No rapidshare and that kind of stuff. Some nice decent servcie with security.

Consider a hosting company that will give you…

(1) anonymous FTP users

(2) the ability to create multiple FTP user accounts, and designate the maximum space for each (with either shared or separate folders)

(3) possibly different accounts with a limit on bandwidth to keep users from dragging down your whole hosting account. Typically you do this by signing up as a "reseller", which typically gives you access to a utility called Web Hosting Manager (WHM)
