Isn’t it disgusting that people are making a buck off the VT massacre?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Just hours after a student at Virginia Tech went on a killing spree that claimed 33 lives Monday, speculators began snatching up domain names related to the shooting.

Dozens of people registered sites like vatechbloodbath.com, virginiatechmurders.com and blacksburgmassacre.com through companies like GoDaddy.com and Enom, Inc. Several of the names went up for sale on eBay later that day.

OMG that is horrible!! I know someone who died. Lauren McCain. It is really sad!! My brothers favorite teachers died ther also. It struck me like a blow to the head. People are stupid and idiotic. Hopefully people will see this is not VT’s fault and it doesn’t reflect on the school. VT is one of the best schools. This could have happened to Yale or Princeton also. VT was just really unlucky.

What’s the difference between…?

What’s the difference between

AND

http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/domains/?s_fptrough=dm_acq_domainname_20081001

Yahoo Domains simply gives you a domain, but you’ll have to find a computer (known as a server) to host it on. The server would most likely be your computer, meaning whenever anyone went to your website, they would be accessing files on your computer. This means that whenever you want your website to "work", you would need your computer to be on. Yahoo Webhosting gives you a domain and space on a server to host your files on for your website. I would HIGHLY recommend Yahoo Webhosting.

Is this a problem with SEO?

Say my site consist of two sections- 1.sports articles and 2.a sports directory. Each section consist of using some of the same sub-categories such as baseball. However, different content is posted. However, for the baseball directory pages I create domain names such as the following:

http://www.domainname.com/baseball-directory.html
http://www.domainname.com/baseball-cards-directory.html
http://www.domainname.com/baseball-jobs-directory.html

Each page has same top nagivation and footer. Is this okay how I setup these URL’s?

The only possible peoblem would be a duplication of content, which you say isn’t happening, so you should be fine. The same top nav and footer isn’t a problem at all, it’s a best practice for web design. Just be sure to include a site map of your website, linked to from your homepage. Google has a program that allows to you to submit your sitemap directly to them. I would also make sure that you have a very obvious graphical link between the two main sections of your site, to help visitors move around.

should you use web templates or create your own?

Monday, October 19th, 2009

I am starting my own business and wanted to know should i use templates or create my own, and should you use someone like yahoo to host your site and if i elect to use yahoo would it strictly be my domainname.com or some drawn out url to find me…

if you purchase a domain name then it will be yourdomainname.com or whatever.
but to answer your above question, I NEVER use pre-made templates. it makes your company look cheap, and
un-professional, always make the website from scratch. Then the client will feel more secure with doing business with you.

I got your email but it wouldn’t let me reply. but here is my reply:

yes, If you use yahoo to host a domain, as long as you have your domain point to their domain servers, then it will only be yourdomain.com.
Or, if you don’t want it to point to their domain servers, then you can use re-directing, they will type in yourdomain.com and it will redirect to yourdomain.com/whatever/whatever. either way, all they will have to do is type in yourdomain.com.

hope this helps

Setting up web domain forwarding?

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

If I register a domain, how do I set up forwarding to my existing URL?

Specifically using godaddy.com.

If you typed in my address, we’ll say www.domainname.com for arguement sake, would it go directly to my site www.freesiteurl.com ?

First you must have a domain name on Go Daddy
then:

*-To Forward a Domain
-Log in to your Account Manager.

-In the My Products section, click Manage Domains.

-Select the domain name(s) you want to forward.

-Click Forward.

-Select Enable.

-In the Forward To field, enter the URL to which you want to forward your domain name(s).

-In the Redirect Type area, select one of the following:
301
Redirects to the site you specified in the Forward To field using a "301 Moved Permanently" HTTP response.
The HTTP 301 response code tells user-agents (including search engines) that the location has permanently moved.
302

-Redirects to the site you specified in the Forward To field using a "302 Found" HTTP response. The HTTP 302 response code tells user-agents (including search engines) that the location has temporarily moved.

-Click OK.

What domain name should I buy? Please help!?

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

I am going to buy a domain name to set up a website for selling my digital illustrations internationally. But for my desired domain name, only .net and .org is available. .com is already taken :( . So which should I buy? And please tell me is "domain-name.com" better than "domainname.net" or "domainname.org" (please note the hyphen)?
… Also please mention some good registration sites. Thanks

I’ve always used http://www.register4less.com to buy and host my domain names (four)

So far, no problems at all and they host with no advertising on your site.

They are very quick to reply to any questions.

I’m not too computer literate, so sometimes I get lost in the lingo at the site, but if you are up on computer-ease, you will do well by them.

You can do a search for the name you want and the .com or .net or whatever name you want…there are many more names available…not just those three you mentioned.

Good luck!

PS. I almost forgot the rest of your question…

Personally, I like the hypen if it’s a long name, then it "defines the words" better…but that’s just my opinion.

If .com is gone, I’d go with .net…
Sounds like you might have to go that way or change the name of your web site.

Again, good luck with it! :)
