how can i understand the exact expire date of my Domain name?

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

can i be sure that at this date my domain will expire?
in whois.com this text was displayed:
NOTICE: The expiration date displayed in this record is the date the registrar’s sponsorship of the domain name registration in the registry is currently set to expire. This date does not necessarily reflect the expiration date of the domain name registrant’s agreement with the sponsoring registrar. Users may consult the sponsoring registrar’s Whois database to view the registrar’s reported date of expiration for this registration.

Well it means that they(whois) get an expire date from the provider, but it can change. if the day of expire comes they still can extend it.

To protect a business name within your industry, you would apply for a trademark.

Trademarks can be names of products or services, logos, slogans, packaging and even sounds and smells. In essence, a trademark can be almost anything that is used to identify a particular product or service. Registering a trademark grants the owner exclusive rights to the mark within the specified industry.

Of course, it’s necessary to research the mark comprehensively prior to filing to ensure that there is no possibility of infringing upon another party.

This entails searching the pending & registered Federal and State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files. Then, if clear, you can decide if you would like to file for a Federal or a State trademark.

To register a trademark, that’s done either through your Secretary of State for a State trademark or the US Patent & Trademark Office for a Federal trademark.

If you are only conducting business in one state, then a State trademark is most appropriate. If you conduct (OR are planning to conduct) business in at least 2 states OR between the US & any other country, you can file for a Federal trademark.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Who Actually Owns Domain Name Registration.?

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

Who Actually Owns Domain Name Registration, i mean when we buy a domain name who do we pay for the privilege. I know hosting company’s offer domain name registration and take a cut if they are a reseller, but who owns the actual business.

I’m not sure that it is a business. I think if you have a domain name server you can register domains. It is more of a standard than a business. I found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Corporation_for_Assigned_Names_and_Numbers

That organisation oversees domain names but isn’t a business but a non-profit organisation.

Any websites offer free domain name registration??

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

I don’t mean any subdomains, directories or anything like batcave.net, geocities.com. I mean domain name registrations such as .com, .co.uk, .org etc but for absolutely free.

No! You can only get free sub domains! Somebody has to pay for the registration!
