Which hosting option works best for a fledgling website developer?

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

I had someone ask me to develop a website for his business (he wants to do it cheap). I tried to talk him out of it, because I’m inexperienced at doing business websites. It’s a learning experience for me, so I agreed to do it for FREE!

Here’s the thing: I’ve developed websites before, but for organizations and churches, and personal use. Never for a business: different audience and set of requirements, and goals.

What’s the best hosting/domain-name solution for a commercial site? My preference is to do everything with one outfit: hosting, registration, and site building, like GoDaddy. But is that the best way? Is there any justification for using separate companies to handle the hosting, and registration, then I would create the site from scratch using NetObjects or FrontPage (which would require a great deal more design/build time).

What’s your advice? (aside from comments like "just hire a professional," etc.)

You are right to be concerned. There is a difference in building a website for personal pleasure, etc., and building one for a business that needs to generate traffic and thus an income.

I am by no means an expert, rather an amateur. That is why I went with the experts at SBI. Unfortunately, it isn’t free, but it is VERY good value for money. It is $299 for the year, but it includes EVERYTHING way beyond just the simple hosting and domain name. They teach you step by step how to build a website that will actually be a business that draws traffic which is really what you need.

If you seriously want to do this project for your friend (I commend you because it is a lot of work), I would suggest that you tell him/her that if they want it done right, they ought to pay for SBI and let you do it right for them. They will be glad in the long run and you will learn a huge amount. (Then maybe you could go on to build a business website of your own :)

Anyway, I just started myself 6 months ago and am building a site called http://www.chocolate-candy-mall.com It is coming along really well. I love it. There is no way I could have done it without the video tutorials, step by step action guide, all the help from other SBIers, and mostly the unbelievable tools included in the SBI package. So, I sound like a commercial. That doesn’t make it any less true. :)

If you want a free tour of SBI to see what I am talking about, you can click on my avatar and follow the link in my profile for the free tour.

I wish you and your friend the best of success.

I’ve been looking to use Streamline.net as my web hosting server.?

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

The cheapest version is about £13.99 a year. You get a free Domain Name Registration, free Domain Name Transfer, £25 free Google ADWords Voucher (what does this mean?) and there is no set up fee. It doesn’t say anything about bandwidth or space.

Could anybody have a look at it and tell me whether it’s worth the price and give me a detailed description (in English!!!) of what I get? I’m very new to all of this and don’t really know what I’m supposed to be looking for.

Also, do I really need Password Protection (£15 extra a year) or any of the other extra features?

I would appreciate any help.

see the sorce below, they will have all the answers
try them they are terrific,
they are computer pro’s

Would unsigned bands pay for a professional website instead of just a myspace page?

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

Hi,
I’m thinking of starting a web design business that purely focusses on providing cheap websites for unsigned bands.

I know myspace is hugely popular mainly because there are no costs involved.

Would unsigned bands be interested in having a proper website instead of a myspace page despite the extra costs involved. (domain name registration:£8 per year and £5 per month hosting)

How much would they pay for the initial design and build of the site?

If you are in a band, your opinion is especially helpful.

why buy the milk if you can get the cow for free? myspace has a wide audience and even if 1% of the users listen to your song it still alot of people that you’re reaching. but hey, the con is it’s not personal enough and you can give it pizzazz. go to a webdesigner and get an estimate.

What is the least expensive way to register a domain name? How long does it last? Can I choose my host later?

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

I’d like to register a domain name. I’m not going to use it for anything right now; I just want to reserve it for my website in the future (possibly a couple years or more from now).

So, what’s the cheapest way, and how long does it last? If I register it at one site, am I "locked in" to using that site to renew the registration when it expires?

And, am I locked into that site to host my content when I’m ready? In other words, can I choose to register my domain on one site and choose a completely different site to host the content?

Thanks!

You can purchase domain names cheaply from a variety of companies, such as Godaddy. No, you are not locked into them to renew, as long as you have the registration information, and you can choose a different host by transferring the registration information. The host will be able to help you with the transfer.

Domain Name Selling?

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

I own a domain name, and I no longer need it. I want to sell it legally and cheaply. I have heard of Sedo, but I was wondering if there were any other options that are cheap too. I was also wondering what is the process of handing over the ownership, like all the registration, passwords, and personal info used to purchase the domain.

If you have any ideas, or are even interested in purchasing feel free to contact me.

if you want to sell it cheaply then it’s probably easyer to just let it go back in the system. If i was to use any domain sale service it would be sedo or afternic (http://www.afternic.com/).

The procedure to transfer ranges in difficulty depending on the extension ie .co.uk .jp .com .eu… (they are run by differenct organisations so have different processes, go to wikipedia to find out more)
