How do i buy a registered domain name?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

How do i contact owners and attempt to buy a domain name that is already registered but hasn’t been used?

OR

Is there any legal ramification of registering a domain name that is extremely similar to an unused registered name? Thanks

You can normally use various tools (Often the domain salesmen have them on the website) to find contact information. The main tool you want is called "whois" An example is at http://www.whois.net/whois_new.cgi?d=yahoo&tld=com which gives you contacts for Yahoo.

Once you have contact info, you can contact and negotiate.

Legal raifications of similar? There are quite a few. If for example you registeres Yahho.com, and set up a site that looked like Yahoo, you would get a little interest. The actual legal implications would vary, but copyright and trademark infringements are the first steps, with the potential of fraud if you are trying to make money out of it.

where can i find the cheapest domain name?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

godaddy.com requires you to get another package with a domain registration. Yahoo sells domain names pretty cheap the first year, after that it shoots up to an annual rate of $34.95.

Who has the cheapest domain name registration, and is very reliable as well?

Hello Carmen,

.COM domains are $9.99 all over the internet, regardless of the provider you choose.

Some providers offer discount coupons. Google for "Provider Coupons".

Yahoo does not give the kind of flexibility and technology on the long run. I wouldn’t recommend them.

If you are going with GoDaddy, choose your domain and SKIP all the follow up sales and suggestions before you purchase. It will only cost you $9.99.

I used to use GoDaddy to buy domains earlier. Now, I use NameCheap to buy domains because of their Terms of Service. Their TOS are far better then GoDaddy when it comes to handling spam complaints.

Lets say you have a product website, and there are hundreds or thousands of partners promoting it for you. A few of them use bad promotional techniques which could send a complaint about your Domain, to the Domain Registrar. At these instances NameCheap have better TOS than GoDaddy.

If you are going with GoDaddy for Domain Registration, pick up the Web Hosting package with them too.

If you are NOT going with GoDaddy for Domain Registration, HostGator is a good low cost option for Web Hosting. They support all technologies, can scale up to what ever traffic you are expecting, and have excellent 24/7 phone and email support.

Almost forgot, you could also host multiple Domain Names on a single hosting package.

What does this mean?

Let’s say you buy 2 or 3 new domain names in the future. At this point you will NOT need to purchase additional Web Hosting space. The existing Hostgator "baby plan" can be used for the 3 domains at NO additional cost.

This will save you lots of money on the long run. Read about the hostgator "Baby" package just incase you’re interested.

Hope this helps.

Have a nice day!

What skills are needed to operate a web hosting company ?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

I am interesting in buying an existing web hosting company , do I need to have expert knowledge of computer programming ? If so , where can this be outsourced ?

The skills required depend on the type of application you plan to host. If you plan to host a LAMP (Linux / PHP) then some knowledge of those products would be very useful, if not mandatory.

If you choose to do Windows .NET hosting you may want to get your MSCE, and other such certifications. I would recommend that you familiarize yourself with how a hosting company operates, as you will need some business skills, marketing skills, as well as some negotiation skills.

This all assumes that you plan to build a bricks and mortar hosting company. If you plan to simply outsource, then you need some analytical skills, and social networking skills or connections.

You should analyze the company you are planning to buy, and determine what technologies are in use, and what the clients want / use.

Extracting a Particular Text Pattern from HTML Files?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

I have more than 4000 HTML Files. I need only a particular line from those files.

Each file contains some lines with a same pattern, and I would like to extract only those lines.

The pattern that I would like to extract from all the files looks like: javascript:listen(’http://www.domainname.com’,'http://www.anotherdomainname.com/somefilename.ext’,0)

Can Anybody suggest me a solution for this?

PS: I don’t have a Linux System, hence I need a batch file Script or a kind of software which runs on Windows Platform for obtaining the solution for this problem.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

I understand from your question that you want to find all occurrences of the given pattern, with each occurrence potentially having a unique URL. I also assume that you are only interested in the URL, because you cut off the rest of the text in your example of the pattern. I then assume that you wish to manipulate or use the search results or URLs in some programmatic way.

Assuming then that you have some programming experience, I suggest that you write a program or script that uses regular expressions to find the occurrences. The following regular expression pattern should suffice:

javascript:listen\(’http://\w+.\w+.\w+[\/\w*.]*’

After some brief testing, this pattern found occurrences like:
1) javascript:listen(’http://www.domainname.com’
2) javascript:listen(’http://www.mydomainname.com/test/page.svc’

If this helped you in any way, but is not sufficient, you may read more about Regular Expressions here:
http://www.regular-expressions.info/reference.html

There are many programming languages that support the use of regular expressions, e.g. vbscript, Microsoft .NET C#, C++, VB, etc.

Can anyone give advice about web hosting for multiple clients?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

I create websites for small non-profits, taking care of all the web hosting currently in GoDaddy. Is there a solution where I can host many websites, with their own domain names, yet all be in my one web hosting account so that I can pay, manage, etc. without creating multiple accounts for each client. Also, I am not bound to GoDaddy as a host so alternatives are welcome. Thanks!

http://www.hostgator.com/ is a great place to do what you want. You are on a shared server and you can control all sites from one central control panel.

Where can I go to learn web hosting from the ground up?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

I know nothing about it but would like to purchase a server, primarily for my own use, but also do web hosting for others for profit. Can anyone tell me where I would go (a website, a comprehensive but easy to understand book for newbies) to learn what I need to know about web hosting?

Try w3schools.com - it is free resource, no need to buy book for something that changes so frequently.

Have fun learning. Also see the source below for more info about using web hosting for money.
